Never laced up before? No worries! SRDL runs a fantastic gender-inclusive ten-week Skater Development Program that offers an introduction to skating skills for recreational skating or for progressing on to play roller derby. No matter what your experience level we have a place for you. If you’re over 18 and want to know more, please get in touch or check out our intake info posts.

Learn to skate

Level One:

Intro to roller skating

Level 1 is our program for beginner or intermediate skaters. Over ten weeks, coaches from SRDL will teach you the fundamentals of skating and derby skills including falls, stops, balance and stride. Everything you need to become a great skater, whether you want to play derby, referee, or skate for fun. Level 1 finishes with an assessment of the skating skills you need to progress to Level 2 of the Skater Development Program. (Level 1 is strictly non-contact.)

Next session

Program starts Sunday 16 July 2023 -  and you can register now!

Level two:

derby fundamentals

Level 2 is a ten-week program that prepares skaters for the WFTDA/MRDA Minimum Skills test. Trainers from SRDL and SMASH will help you to improve your skating fundamentals and also prepare you for full-contact skating. You’ll start learning the basics of strategy and how the game of roller derby is played.

Next session

Program starts Tuesday June 13 - stay tuned for next intake

Level three:

road to scrimmage

Once a skater has successfully completed the full Minimum Skills test they progress to Level 3 where our trainers prepare them for scrimmage – practice games of roller derby where you get to put all of your training into action! You’ll join regular league training as part of your final preparations to play roller derby.
