Who is it for?
Level 2 is open to anyone 18 years and older who wants to learn beginner roller skating skills (Level 2 will include contact as you learn roller derby).
When, where and how much are the sessions?
Sessions are run at SRDL’s training venue, Dunc Gray Velodrome in Bass Hill on a Sunday. Level 2 is a 12 week course that you purchase from SRDL $60 for annual league membership, $70 per month for training. Skate Vic Insurance must be purchased through the Skate Vic portal - $85 Senior Development.
Do I need to know how to skate?
Yes, Level 2 is geared towards being confident enough on skate to start learning Roller Derby skills. If you can skate but haven’t in a while, we review LEARN TO SKATE skills in the first week. You can move to other levels based on personal comfort.
By attending Level 2 will I be able to join a team and play derby?
Level 2 incorporates full membership to SRDL! As you learn in the Roller Derby Fundamentals program we highly encourage you to take part in other activities, observing scrimmage/training, learning to officiating as a referee or an NSO (Non-Skating Official). Level 2 is a step towards joining a team but does not guarantee placement on a team. (It's kinda up to you and your journey)
What if I can't make every session?
Level 2 is a progressive program but skills will be reviewed each week, so you will have a chance to cover any skills you missed. Chat to your coach if there is anything you’re concerned about. We also strongly encourage skaters to practice outside of scheduled sessions.
Is full payment required if I can not make all the sessions?
No, Initial $60 joining fee and first month’s $70 training dues. After, each month training dues are due by the 15th of that month. We cannot facilitate a pay-per-session & the course fee is non refundable once you have started the program
Does SRDL provide gear or will I need to purchase and/or borrow my own?
No, SRDL does not currently have the capacity to provide gear; you will need to source your own. There are some great skater-owned and operated businesses in Australia, as well as many buy-sell-swap groups for derby gear!
What gear do I need again?
Helmet (not a bicycle helmet)
Knee & Elbow pads - ideally vert style or derby kneepads, for best coverage.
Wrist guards
Quad Skates
Mouthguard
Some people like to wear padded shorts, or purchase a Tailsaver to protect their tailbones. Some skaters also like to wear shinguards.
